Hotdish Revolution makes it’s way into comic book

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICEThe Hotdish Revolution, HNIA’s signature annual event and cook-off competition, was recently immortalized  - in comic book form.

In Issue One of the locally published Manly Tales of Cowardice, Minneapolis comic-creator and Northeast resident Danno Klonowski (a.k.a. Danno a.k.a. Staple Genius a.k.a. Dank!) writes that he was suffering from a bit of writer’s block when his wife suggested switching the quest for the perfect muffin receipe to a quest for the “In-Your-Face” winning hotdish receipe, based on Northeast’s annual Hotdish Revolution.

“The story had no ending,” pens Klonowski.  He noted on his website that as the story was originally written, “Fleming’s is trying to complete the perfect hotdish for a contest, but when I originally did this he was baking muffins. And that flyer about the contest Atlantis Lad has? That was just a recipe for muffins.”

Manly Tales of Cowardice is a comedy / “adventure” series featuring Fleming Hazmat, his robotic assistant Betsy Rossbot, his fish-boy intern Atlantis Lad, and an ever-growing roster of villains.

“The story plays out exactly the same… but I had forgotten when I stopped it was missing the last 2-3 pages - no ending,” recalls Klonowski, “Fortunately as I went back in to finish this months later I brought up my lack of a story resolution to my wife.  As it happens, the Northeast Minneapolis yearly Hotdish Revolution was on the horizon,” a fact his wife pointed out. “Within seconds the ending was written in my head, and on paper shortly after that.”

“Inspiration comes from lots of places…”

Danno Klonowski is currently finishing up a comic series about Minnesota State Congressperson Michele Bachmann called False Witness which is a collaborative effort between Bill Prendergast (writing, pencils), Lupi Miguinti (inks) and Dan Olson (inks). The first issue of this series is expected to release early this summer, with a preview running in the City Pages.
