  • How to Recognize a Minneapolis Police Officer

Shared by the Minneapolis Police Department
The Minneapolis Police Department wants all residents to feel safe and informed when interacting with law enforcement. If you’re ever unsure whether someone is a real officer, don’t hesitate to call 911 to verify.

How to Identify a Real Officer:
They will clearly state their name and agency
You can ask for their name, badge number, and agency — they are required to provide it
Their uniform and vehicle should have visible badges, patches, and agency markings
If markings are missing, it may be a red flag
If you didn’t call the police, use extra caution

    Agencies that Serve Minneapolis:
    Minneapolis Police Department
    Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office
    Metro Transit Police
    Minnesota State Patrol

    If You’re Unsure:
Call 911 — even during a traffic stop or if someone is at your door
911 dispatchers can verify if an officer is assigned to your area

Your safety matters. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to pause and confirm.
